Appsmith is a low-code builder for internal apps, aimed at developers. Its Community edition is maintained under the Apache 2.0 licence, and any edition can run on the company's own infrastructure1.

Best for: Developer teams that want a self-hostable internal tool builder with audit logs and custom roles at a published per-user price.

Not the right fit for: Teams without developers, or buyers who expect AI to build a whole tool from a description.

What Appsmith does

Apps connect to language models, databases, SaaS tools and REST or GraphQL APIs, and Git integration supports a CI/CD workflow. AI copilots generate custom widgets and workflow logic from natural-language prompts, and apps can include AI interactions on company data. The homepage does not describe generating a whole app from a description1.

The paid Business plan adds unlimited environments, Git repositories and workspaces, custom roles, audit logs and backups to AWS S3. Developers are billed as standard users, and a 15-day Business trial needs no card2.

Published evidence

  • Block (vendor-published). Appsmith’s homepage reports that Block processes new customer applications 50% faster.1

Appsmith also cites GSK patching 3,500 Linux servers in one sprint1. Both figures are vendor-reported.

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • Audit logs, custom roles and unlimited Git repositories are included in the $15 Business plan.
  • Any edition can run on the company’s own infrastructure, with an air-gapped option.
  • Developers who build apps are billed as standard users, with no separate builder seat.
  • Lists SOC 2 Type II compliance.

Limits

  • SAML or OIDC single sign-on and SCIM provisioning are Enterprise features, listed at $2,500 a month for 100 users.
  • The Business plan stops at 99 users.
  • AI assists developers with widgets and logic; it does not design a tool from a description.

Choose another option if: The people building the tool are not developers (Softr or OpenLazarus), or you want AI to generate the first version (Retool).

Pricing

Published: Free (up to 5 cloud users); Business $15 per user a month (up to 99 users); Enterprise $2,500 a month for 100 users; Community edition free.

Questions to ask Appsmith

  • Who on our team will write the JavaScript and queries the apps need?
  • Will we pass 99 users within a year, which would move us to Enterprise?
  • What does self-hosting require from us for upgrades and backups?
  • Which AI features use our data, and where is it processed?
